Poker fits America because it’s democratic. The playing field of poker is level. Bill Gates, Microsoft’s billionaire founder, and TV comedians like David Brenner and Drew Carey have both been seen at low-limit poker tables in Las Vegas, where you could play against them and you could even beat them. Famous actors like Gabe Kaplan and Matt Damon, and Los Angeles Laker’s owner Jerry Buss have all been seen playing poker across the table from Las Vegas taxi drivers and out-of-town tourists visiting from Kansas City. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the richest, the funniest, or the smartest person in the world, because across the poker table everyone has the same chance. Everyone meets as equals. There is no game more democratic, more sociable, more evenhanded or more fun, than the great American game of poker. 2, 3
The Poker Stories in this Book are “All Tall Tales.” The stories in this book are written for knowledgeable poker players, those individuals who already know that a Flush beats a Straight. Players who know they should pay attention to the exposed cards during the play of a poker hand. Players, who more often than not, win in family poker games. The stories contained in this book are interlaced with American culture; they are all fictitious, all made-up, most having little historical basis, conceived solely for fun and entertainment. Even the author, being an avid poker player, would never sit down at a poker table to play cards with the likes of “The Devil,” “Jesse James,” or even “Grandpa.” The author plays poker as a form of recreation and relaxation. The author believes if one wants to have fun playing poker, always play with friends or family, or at least with players who don’t play as well as you do. Then poker will be fun, entertaining, and maybe even monetarily rewarding.
