THE WORLD-FAMOUS SCARNE CUT While acting as gambling consultant to the United States Armed Forces and Yank: The Army Weekly during World War II, I devised the Scarne Cut to protect servicemen against the skilled Poker sharp who employs sleight of hand to cheat the GI and deal himself or his confederate the winning Poker hand. When the Scarne Cut is put into use, it will protect the Poker player against most of the sharp's crooked moves described in this chapter. As to the effectiveness of the Scarne Cut and my exposures of gambling cheats in Yank and national periodicals during World War II, I will simply quote General Hap Arnold, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Air Force. He said, "John Scarne's one-man crusade against crooked gambling in the Armed Forces during World War II saved servicemen tens of millions of dollars a month in potential gambling losses when he practically cleaned up crooked gambling in the Armed Forces singlehanded."
