Anyone who made the newspaper headlines was looked up to. The top bootleggers and mobsters were on the same celebrity scale as Jack Dempsey, the heavyweight champion, or Babe Ruth, the Home Run King, and they mingled with the outstanding citizens of that era.
In those days many were prouder to shake hands with Arnold Rothstein, America's kingpin gambler, or Al Capone, the Chicago racket boss, than with Calvin Coolidge, the President of the United States.
