Practice Matters

The dealer deals five cards to each player,

The dealer deals five cards to each player, one at a time clockwise, starting with the player at his left. After the dealer has received his fifth card, two horizontal rows of five cards each are dealt face down on the table. The row farthest from the dealer is known as the "Poker row," and the row closest to the dealer is known as the "discard row." Poker row cards may be used to help form Poker hands; the discard row is used only to discard matching cards.

When playing Scarney High-Low Poker,

When playing Scarney High-Low Poker, the player holding the highest-ranking five-card hand, provided he has declared for high, and the player holding the lowest total-point count with zero, one, two, three, four or five cards, provided he has declared for low, share the pot equally. If a player calls "high-low," he must win both high and low to be declared the winner. When declaring high, the player may select the best five cards out of his hand and Poker row. Discard row cards cannot be used as part of a hand. The point value of cards when calling low are as follows: The ace is the lowest-ranking card, having a value of 1; the king, queen, and jack are valued at 10 points each. All other cards have their numerical face value. To repeat, standard Poker hands do not count when announcing low. When cards are used from the Poker row to fill in a hand, the player must state the value of his hand. If a player calls his hand incorrectly and the pot has not yet been collected, he may correct the error; but if the pot has been collected the error must stand.
