By the time Green wrote this, Poker had become the number one cheating game on the Mississippi boats. It received even more action than Three-Card Monte. After losing heavily at Monte only the dumbest chumps would later fail to realize that they had been swindled; but twenty-card Poker seemed to be a legitimate game, and they would come back for more. In my opinion Poker, like Three-Card Monte, was developed by the card sharps.
Most dictionaries and game historians say that the word "Poker" comes from an early eighteenth-century French game, Poque. Others say it is derived from an old German game, Pochspiel, in which the element of bluffing played a part and the players indicated whether they would pass or open by rapping the table and saying, "Ich poche!" Someone has tried to trace the word to poche, the French word for pocket, and I have even heard it argued that Poker derives from the Hindu pukka.
