Probability is the chance that an event will occur For example, the probability that Heads will come up in a coin toss is 1/2 or 50%. This is calculated by dividing the number of desired outcomes, 1 ( heads) by the number of total possible outcomes, 2 (heads, tails).

The following are some examples of how probabilities are calculated in common poker situations: Any Pocket Pair:The probability of being dealt any pocket pair can be calculated as: 3 / 51 or 1 / 17 or 5.9%. The 3 represents the 3 remaining cards in the deck that are of the same value as the first card, dealt. The 51 represents the number of all remaining cards in the deck. In other words, if you are dealt an Ace as your first hole card, then there are 3 more Aces in the remaining deck of 51 cards.
