As Oppenhiemer came in, after inspecting the site, he could feel the tension in the room. Every man there was short on sleep, short of temper, and moody. After a few minutes of forced conversation with the other scientists, Oppie looked up to see the door open and General Groves slamming into the room. He was, as usual, angry and trying to bully everyone. In this case the General was extremely angry with the government’s meteorologist. He said the man could not stop the predicted thunderstorms for the day. The burly General, Chief of Government Operations, kept saying, “I ordered clear weather! God Dam it!” General Groves’ grumbling was causing the already tense scientists to become even more upset and anxious.
