A fairly high three of a kind is an average winning hand with four or more active players at showdown. Two pairs wins the average pot when two or three active players remain at the showdown. However, when five or more players remain to the end, straights, flushes and full houses are so common that a player can't bet on anything less, provided that the face-up cards of the opponents (plus their previous betting) would justify any possibility that opponents hold higher hands.
